Anointing of the Sick

Let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord  (James 5:14:15)

The Anointing of the Sick (or the ‘Sacrament of the Sick’) is described in the letter of St James 5:14-15: ‘Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord and the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.’

It is usual for Catholics to receive this Sacrament when they are sick or in hospital. When a person is anointed, they receive the strength and healing power of God to assist them with their illness. If you would like to receive this Sacrament please speak to Fr Matt or make contact with us here.

If you know you are going into hospital, it would be good to receive this Sacrament beforehand.

This Sacrament can be celebrated many times in a person’s life as we all need healing. It is a meeting with Jesus Christ who comes to strengthen us and bring us wholeness. Usually once a year there is a celebration of this Sacrament in the church where we invite all who need healing to come and receive this special anointing.

We also have a team who are delighted to do Home visits for Holy Communion and/or a bit of companionship, so do make contact with us if this would help.
